The state owned utility was born with a germ of self destruction after resisting a long foreseen closedown.

Energy Loss as a Competitiveness Indicador,
Luz
y Fuerza del Centro 1997-2007

lot has been said about the surprising decision to close-down Luz y Fuerza del Centro, the state owned utility that had been operating with recognized losses during many years. Compaņia de Luz y Fuerza del Centro was born with a germ of self-destruction from the moment it was incorporated in 1995.

The circumstances that led to this Presidential Decree to liquidate of the state owned utility, definitive now, are not surprising. The company had refused to close-down in spite of its eminent trend to disappear since its structure was just obsolete  and this eminent action had been put off by its Union for political reasons.

The process will obviously be complex and it will lead to all types of misleading, confusing and non-accurate information. The process can be contaminated by political problems that can generate fear and foster anarchy; therefore, it is important for the population to stay calm and bear with this governmental action that is aiming to tilt the balance of power in favor of the Mexican citizens.

We should also point out that this measure is looking forward to fostering productivity in a sector which shows disadvantages when compared with other sectors of the economic activity and that, due to barriers set up by the Union (SME), showed an alarming crisis of competitiveness. Luz y Fuerza was not a profitable entity resulting into an unsustainable burden to the government and the Mexican population who were the main victims for having to withstand the constant abuse and low quality service offered by the company.

We shall now wait for the measures and their application. We will see if the liquidation and possible re-hiring of an important number of workers under new working conditions of the now extinct Luz y Fuerza del Centro, provides a breath of fresh air for the other state owned utility, Comision Federal de Electricidad that is now the hegemonic supplier of electricity around the country.

We will have to see if this adjustment can be useful and can motivate other unions to fire up the engines in order to review, analyze and pinpoint opportunity areas where they can improve for their own benefit, for their customers and the weighed down economy that is looking for new horizons that can lead to new opportunities for economic, political and social sustainability.
